Alodia Fans Day: Personal Media in Action
As expected, Alodia Fans Day was a smashing success, stealing the show at E-games’ Domination III event. Filipina gamer-blogger-cosplayer idol Alodia Gosiengfiao and her musician sister Ashley looked resplendent in new costumes from E-games’ Chinese MMORPG ZXOnline. They also wowed the crowd by singing on stage, Alodia for the first time ever. Cosplayers even paid tribute to their idol by cosplaying as Alodia in her many costumes over the years.
The Philippines is a very traditional country, still dominated by mass media and mainstream interests. With the singular exception of Filipina-American videoblogger Christine Gambito, for a single Filipina niche blogger to carry her own fan event with her own personal brand was previously inconceivable.
What Alodia has accomplished here heralds a paradigm shift for Philippine media. She has destroyed the old myth that only mainstream artists manufactured by big media warrant fan events. She has proven that self-published niche artists can carry their own mobworthy events.
Now I can’t wait for AlodiaCon. It will be the Gnomedex of Filipino otaku geekery — except that Alodia is prettier than Chris Pirillo.

Come to think of it, she does look like a mainstream “artista”, the event was sponsored by E-games, and she gained popularity thru big media contests.
I don’t recall her participating in “Star Circle Quest”, “Pinoy Dream Academy”, or any other such big media rubbish. 😛
