Alodia Event Confirmed

Alodia at ToyCon 2008

When Filipina gamer-blogger-cosplayer Alodia Gosiengfiao was mobbed by fans at ToyCon 2008, vastly overshadowing Filipina TV actress Marian Rivera at the event, I speculated that an AlodiaCon was not far off. It’s not impossible for bloggers to get whole conventions centered around themselves and their interests. Geek blogger Chris “Lockergnome” Pirillo, for instance, has produced the Gnomedex tech conference annually since 2001.

It’s not impossible for bloggers to become convention attractions in themselves, either. Japanese blog queen Shoko Nakagawa, for instance, filled the Nokia Theater as guest of honor at Anime Expo 2008. That’s why I’m not surprised to hear that an Alodia Cosplay Event and Fans Club Day will be part of E-games‘ Domination III event on April 4 at SMX Convention Center. Alodia is an E-games endorser.

It’s not quite AlodiaCon yet, but it’s certainly a step forward for personal branding and self-publishing in the Philippines. Too many Filipinos still think dependence on offline mass media is the only legitimate path to mobworthy fame. One guy at ToyCon expressed complete bewilderment at why some Internet nerd would attract bigger crowds than some big TV star. Alodia’s event will help further disprove that backward mindset.
