Filipino MMA Fighters
Even though I’m six feet tall, I could never understand why Filipinos love basketball. Our players are shorter than Western players. It must be colonial mentality. As Manny Pacquiao demonstrates, we’re so much better at beating the shit out of people. That’s why I was glad to see Filipino mixed martial artists Justin Cruz and […]Click here to continue reading "Filipino MMA Fighters"...|

Just to let you know, Justin Cruz is not a Filipino. He’s Chamorro from Guam
I’m casually into MMA, though UFC is the only real avenue now but there are others that get the lucrative free agents (read Fedor) into awesome match ups.
Brandon Vera is in UFC and Filipino. He lost a lousy match against Tim Sylvia (6’7″ btw) and his ten win streak was broken. However I don’t think he ever faced anyone like Sylvia before his streak. Vera however is young and can possibly get better in the sport.
Unfortunately, the pinoys would have to crack the lightweight division at 148-155 lbs. In that, the best in the world are Takanori Gomi, known for hitting like a sledgehammer and Shawn Sherk, a very physicall cut and excellent ground technician. Among other distinguished names are Jens Pulver, Hermes Franca, etc. Pinoys would definitely need to expose themselves in tournaments in Korea, Japan or maybe even europe or brazil if they want to gain world class experience to take on the best. Theres no question in boxing, so learning either BJJ, greco roman wrestling, sambo, speed judo or a mix of it. Or unless you also mix that w/ some exotic Muay thai that favors grappling as well.
In all, I think pinoys are capable of it but they’d need to catch up if they are to really go head on against the best MMA men of the world.
kudos to pinoy fighters
and a boo to abundo who cant defend himself in a fistfight, and instead cries foul to other people for his booboos.
Actually, I’d like to take out Sherk. Its one of the bad things about MMA which steroid abuse is not necessarily regulated. Personally, I don’t think it helps completely but its also how naturally talented the fighter is.
My typo on Vera as well. He was on 8 win streak, not a ten-win streak. But that proves that with dedication that even pinoys can make a big name for themselves in the world of MMA.
CoCa: Wow, you really know your MMA. Yes, Brandon Vera definitely proves that Filipinos can excel in this sport.
Anonymous: Anyone who seeks a fistfight in a mall is a fool.
