Gundam 00 18: Emotional Rollercoaster!

Gundam 00: Setsuna Versus Thrones

From Nena’s murderous cuteness to Graham’s badass normalcy to Louise’s poetic tragedy to Setsuna’s insane recklessness, Gundam 00 episode 18 is a rip-roaring emotional rollercoaster ride.

Finally, we’re seeing some of the hardcore stuff we can expect from Fullmetal Alchemist director Seiji Mizushima. Until now, Z Gundam was the darkest Gundam series. Is Mizushima trying to beat that record?

Gundam 00: Nena Trinity

I think I’m developing a crush on Nena Trinity. She just massacred a whole extended family of innocent civilians merely because their merriment annoyed her. There’s a certain dangerous thrill to sleeping with a capricious mass murdererer.

Gundam 00 OP2

If the first quarter of Gundam 00 was more about introduction, the second quarter will be more about action. That’s reflected by the second opening sequence of Gundam 00, featuring The Brilliant Green’s Ash Like Snow. Sure, Setsuna ejecting into an orbital skydive for no apparent reason makes for an emo start, but the HD battle scenes make absolutely scrumptious eye candy. Hit series often get bigger budgets — and judging from the animation in its second opening, Gundam 00 is clearly a hit.

The rivalries for three of our four heroes are clearly defined in this opening: Allelujah versus Soma, Lockon versus Graham, and Setsuna versus Ali. That leaves out Tieria. Now who’s supposed to fight that cyberpathic transvestite protocol bitch?
