Book Trailers Hot on YouTube

Cracked Up to Be by Courtney SummersThe cost of distributing offline video once restricted trailers to movies and TV shows. Distributing an online video, on the other hand, costs nothing. That’s why now, even non-video media can have video trailers.

Daisy Whitney shows us a rising new trend on YouTube: book trailers. They’re so easy to distribute, authors aren’t even relying on publishers to promote them.

We used to imagine book characters in our heads before they showed up on the big screen. Now they show up on the small screen before the book even comes out. So which non-video form of entertainment will get video trailers next?

  1. Book trailers are a wonderful way for the publishing industry to compete with video games, television shows, cable shows, movies and music videos. I’m happy to see them become so popular.
You can see an entire channel of them at http://www.youtube.com/booktrailers

As far as distribution goes, “free” does not mean “effective”. You can put the videos on YouTube and similar sites, but what about reader sites? Book clubs? Booksellers? Or even sites that are specific to a certain genre of book (horror sites, comedy sites, etc.)?

If anyone can upload to free to all the same sites, what sets you apart from your competition? Will book trailers on YouTube sell a book? Which is more likely to sell more books? A book trailer on YouTube or a book trailer on BN.com?

    Just some food for thought.
