GMA to Destroy Shaider
Philippine TV network GMA is about to make their own version of the tokusatsu classic Shaider. The genius director they’ve chosen for the job? Dominic Zapata, the same guy who ripped off Sailormoon and denied it. The show will replace GMA’s short-lived Indiana Jones/Lara Croft double ripoff Asian Treasures. Oh yeah, all this rehashing and […]Click here to continue reading "GMA to Destroy Shaider"...|

‘Zaido’ director no ‘Shaider’ fan
MANILA, Philippines — TV director Dominic Zapata admits he didn’t watch the Japanese live-action series “Shaider” as a kid.
“I wasn’t a fan,” he says. “I was more into (Japanese animated cartoon shows) ‘Voltes V’ and ‘Mazinger Z.'”
Now he’s directing GMA 7’s “Zaido,” Pinoy version of “Shaider,” first aired in the country in the late 1980s.
He recounts, “I asked myself, ‘Am I the right guy for this?’ Then I realized that, on the positive side, I’d have a fresh take on it.”
Zapata, who previously directed komiks classics “Darna” and “Captain Barbell” for the Kapuso network, doesn’t mind re-imagining old material for new audiences.
“All the stories in the world have been written. It’s just a matter of repackaging old stories to cater to new tastes.”
He puts it in culinary terms: “Our ancestors have been cooking fish the same way for ages. We just have to come up with new ways to present it.”
He promises to stay true to the “campy” spirit of “Shaider.”
For example, his fight scenes hew closely to the original. “We make use of bigatures — big miniatures — for the action scenes. People in robot or monster costumes do the stunts. That’s the same technique used in Japan.”
Zapata explains: “Technically, we’re making a lot of improvements … like digital doubles for the characters. We now make characters fly and do other things that a person in robot costume can’t do.”
He is also looking at incorporating the French extreme sport Yamakasi Parkour into the story. “It was used in the opening sequence of the latest James Bond movie ‘Casino Royale.’ Stuntmen jump over obstacles without the use of wires and rope. We can try to do those stunts,” he says. “Or maybe we can learn from the local group that practices Yamakasi Parkour.”
The challenge
Zapata asserts that the “P10-billion” GMA network is fully behind him. “So far, they’ve approved all my requests.”
The challenge, he clarifies, isn’t about “trying to beat the competition, it’s trying to outdo yourself.”
“Zaido” premiered last week, on the same night as the ABS-CBN fantaserye “Lastikman.”
“The audience is always looking for something new and different. We’re definitely punching above our weight class with ‘Zaido,'” concludes Zapata
