Guild Wars 2 Dragon Jesus
As Guild Wars’ third anniversary approaches, my thoughts turn to the world-shattering Ancient Dragons I must face in Guild Wars 2. That’s when I see this at GuildWiki:

Okay, I know the Ancient Dragons are big, but I didn’t know they were that big. In related wiki news, Borat is President of Kazakhstan.

The world of Guild Wars 2 will be ravaged by at least five colossal Ancient Dragons, three of whom can be seen slumbering in Eye of the North. One of my guildies spotted an Ancient Dragon encased in the frozen Drakkar Lake. I’d crossed Drakkar Lake during the Eye of the North preview weekend, but I was too busy fighting to look beneath my feet. Naturally, I had to see the creature for myself. After clearing the lake of monsters, this is what I saw.
I use a GeForce 8 series video card, so heavy ice refraction effects obscure the view at obtuse angles. On a lame video card, however, the ice is as clear as glass at any angle. That’s how this guy was able to capture the whole creature in one screen.
As you can see in the next image, the creature’s outline is clearly visible on the overhead world map.

Congratulations to ArenaNet on creating their very own Loch Ness monster. Little Gwen captured players’ imaginations in Prophecies, setting the stage for her teenage return in Eye of the North. Now these big-ass dragons will keep players wondering about them until Guild Wars 2. I can’t wait to face this thing. In fact, I want to wake it up now and see what happens. Droknar’s Sword should make a good icepick…

MSNBC’s Kristin Kalning calls it “an experiment that worked.” Guild Wars can run profitably without server fees because most of its game world is instantiated, cutting down data center costs. ArenaNet’s business model for the game consists of selling expansions of all sizes — from whole campaigns to PvP skill sets to character slots to soundtracks. While quite portable between multiple machines, all expansions are tied to user accounts, making piracy nearly impossible.
Looks like their episodic content business model worked even better than expected. Guild Wars 2 will host a persistent world on its servers — still without server fees. That will make Guild Wars 2 a true MMORPG, minus monthly subscription costs.
Having spent nearly two hundred hours in Guild Wars, I’m glad to hear the next Guild Wars expansion, Eye of the North, will include a Hall of Monuments allowing your Guild Wars 2 characters to inherit accomplishments from your Guild Wars characters. How’s that for a New Game Plus?
