Geek and Gamer Girls

Geek and gamer girls are like unicorns: they’re not supposed to exist. That’s why a group of geek and gamer girls banded together to form the singing quartet humorously known as Team Unicorn. Geek babes Michele Boyd, Clare Grant, Milynn Sarley, and Rileah Vanderbilt cosplay their way through the music video for their song Geek and Gamer Girls, a parody of Katy Perry’s California Gurls.

Geek and Gamer Girls with Geek Celebrity Guests

As it turns out, each and every member of Team Unicorn has some experience entertaining the geek audience. Gamers might recognize Michele from The Guild, a hit Web series about a dysfunctional group of World of Warcraft players. Milynn, known as “TheGamerChick” on YouTube, hosts a Web series for Electronic Arts. Star Wars fans might remember Clare and Rileah as the producers and stars of Saber, a funny video that won the 2009 Star Wars Fan Film Awards for Best Action and Audience Choice.

The girls don’t just entertain geeks; they’re all geeks themselves. They all cosplayed Sailor Moon characters at the 2010 San Diego Comic-Con. Milynn, Rileah, and Michele play in the same World of Warcraft guild. They all wrote the lyrics to Geek and Gamer Girls themselves, filling almost every line with coherent geek culture references. Most of the toys and games in the video came from their own homes.

Robot Chicken creator Seth Green lends his hidden rapping talents to the song. Other geek celebrities lending their cred to the video include Marvel Comics legend Stan Lee and Battlestar Galactica actress Katee Sackhoff.

Geek babes strut their stuff in the music video for Geek and Gamer Girls. Milynn Sarley cosplays Psylocke from X-Men, Clare Grant cosplays Lara Croft from Tomb Raider, Rileah Vanderbilt cosplays The Baroness from G.I. Joe, and Michele Boyd cosplays Han Solo from Star Wars.

Rise of the Geek Babes

G4TV host Olivia Munn popularized the geek babe archetype in the first decade of the twenty-first century. Now we have four geek babes in one music video. With the continuing rise of geek culture and niche media, expect even more geek babes to enter the limelight.

In the meantime, keep your eyes and ears open for the all the awesome audiovisual geek culture references in the video for Geek and Gamer Girls. Download the MP3 at FileFront, and learn more about the song’s origins on the official Star Wars blog. Check out the lyrics below.

Geek and Gamer Girls

Note to gamer girls: “geek babe” is not an empowering label. Sexualizing yourself for male enjoyment is not an empowering act. Congrats on giving gamer guys implicit approval to continue objectifying the crap out of women. I’d rather be accepted as a gamer, not expected to show skin.

    • Mike Abundo says:

Well, somebody’s got her panties in a bunch. Here’s another geek babe to explain that for you.

    • RayBEEZ13 says:

Don’t worry darlin, we don’t expect you to show skin anymore than you expect us too. Because more than likely you share the same body types that us gamer guys do, and we don’t really want to see that dancing around. Now in game, you garner as much respect as you can earn as a gamer. Besides, don’t you have some fantasy guys that you want to see dancing around instead of us? Hmmm? More than likely you do. So get over yourself, the video is funny, stop being such a cry baby.

    • graphxgrrl says:

I’m pretty sure she put that part in there b/c about 5 years ago (maybe even still now) they were running a full page ad in some comic books that featured a nude girl lying in a pile of comic books and her parts were covered up with them; similar to this. I’m pretty sure that’s what it’s referencing.

    • Gamer Dude says:

      Right on, K!

Being sexy isn’t feminism or women’s rights outside of Sarah Palin’s crazy worldview.

The problem with this song isn’t that they’re just objectifying themselves for attention – that can be great fun to play with regardless of your gender. It’s that they’re just a pandering machine. The song is lazily written. And the whole concept is obviously just a marketing ploy. They say “Because like unicorns, geek girls are not supposed to exist!” Uh, welcome to jokes from 10 years ago. No one believes this. They also stole this idea from the poly-amorous community, which is just lazy. Lazy jokes may fly in WoW Trade Chat, but geek culture loves things that are more clever.

But the secret is in the inspiration. They attribute inspiration to the likes of Olivia Munn. Pro-tip: if you want to pretend you’re an honest geek girl, don’t pick a model who didn’t know a thing about anything geeky before becoming a pretty face at G4 as one of your catalyst moments. True geek girls are not going to get their start by making a video featuring lightsabers and lingerie.

And if you want to be a proud geek anything, flaunt your brain and your personality, not your body. That’s what being a geek is about. That’s why we are who we are, because our culture focuses on superficiality and extroversion, and we who focus on our brains and close friendships get ostracized in middle and high school for it.

Geeks come in all shapes and sizes. And the best thing about being a geek is we find everything interesting and worth getting worked up about, not just the mainstream limited views of what is the “right” thing to do or the “right” types of people that are pretty. We don’t care about the People magazine determination of what is pretty this week. We care about what’s under the skin.

Not that we don’t get off on seeing hot people dance around either. Most of us still have the same impulses of what is beautiful our culture tells us is beautiful. That’s a hard thing to ignore. Which is exactly the problem with this. This reeks of pandering to gamer guys. That’s nothing new (see the aforementioned Olivia Munn), but it doesn’t make it any less disgusting.

  2. Desdemina says:

There are all kinds of gamers, just like there’s all kinds of everything else. The image of the geeky girl with braces, glasses, either overweight or scrawny, bad hair and zero social skills is no more accurate of the average geek girl than the idea that we’re all super hot, like Team Unicorn. There are some of both and a lot of us in the middle. But I’d rather have the sexy image than the dorky one! It IS possible to have brainsbodyboth!

Poor geek guys. They still have a bad geek image for the most part… Geek Babes represent!

  3. Mandy Martin says:

I love this video. To K, I love it when my GGG calls me his Gamer babe. I’m not hot like the girls in this video, but that he finds my mind and skillz hot.. I like that. *grins* Thank you Team Unicorn!
