Alodia Photo Influences Jag Billboard?
With the rise of geek culture in the Philippines, Filipina gamer girl Alodia Gosiengfiao has become one of the most influential women in the Philippines. Now that she’s made geekery cool in her country, Alodia’s influence can be seen in even the most nongeeky of objects: from unlicensed concert posters to licensed skincare products.
One particularly popular photo of Alodia shows her holding a PlayStation 3 controller while reclining with a monitor behind her. In juxtaposition to that relaxed gamer imagery, she’s also wearing denim shorts and black see-through stockings. The photo was taken by Alodia’s sister Ashley Gosiengfiao on April 16, 2010.
Fast forward to August 22, 2010: Ashley spots a billboard for the clothing line Jag. She notices that Jag’s billboard looks a lot like her popular photo of Alodia: reclining pose, monitor behind the model, denim shorts, black see-through stockings. The only thing missing from the billboard is the PlayStation 3 controller. Perhaps Jag thought it would be too geeky for their target market.
On one hand, the resemblance between Alodia’s photo and Jag’s billboard could just be one huge coincidence. On the other hand, Jag’s billboard could represent a reversal of cultural norms: a mainstream model imitating a niche model. Perhaps a photographer who works for Jag also happens to be a huge Alodia fan. Perhaps a gamer geek has successfully infiltrated the mainstream Philippine fashion industry.
I’m not going to declare the triumph of gamer culture in the fashion world just yet. Let’s wait until Jag puts a game controller in that model’s hands.
