Cosplayers Perform at TV5 Launch

Over the last few years, we’ve seen Internet service providers getting into the content business. The Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company (PLDT), the country’s largest telco and ISP, acquired game publisher Level Up Philippines in February 2006. Comcast, America’s largest cable TV and Internet service provider, acquired entertainment conglomerate NBC Universal in December 2009.

In October 2009, PLDT acquired the Associated Broadcasting Company, operator of the Philippines’ TV5 network. TV5 is currently the country’s number three network, and PLDT plans to change that by spending $200 million on a massive effort to revitalize the network. TV5 kicked off that revitalization Thursday night with a star-studded gala event at World Trade Center Manila.

A Show of Engagement

Part of TV5’s revitalization effort is an expanded and updated anime lineup. Just as Animax did the week before, TV5 called upon cosplayers to show just how deeply otaku engage with their favorite content.

Led by Filipina cosplay queen Alodia Gosiengfiao and her sister Ashley, the cosplayers performed onstage before a hall filled with big media movers and shakers: bankers, advertisers, journalists. It was Alodia’s most influential mainstream audience ever — and they loved every minute of it. Welcome to the continuing rise of geek culture in the Philippines.

Distant Hopes, Solid Start

With this performance, the cosplayers have taken their media consumer evangelism to the corporate level. After seeing the cosplayers’ passion onstage, perhaps the bankers in the audience will invest a little more in anime series licensing. Perhaps the advertisers in the audience will place a few more ads next to anime episodes. Perhaps the journalists in the audience will write a little about how crazy these kids are about anime and otaku culture. For Filipino anime fans, these are all distant hopes — but this performance is a solid start.

Alodia and Ashley cosplayed Doronjo and Ai-chan from one of TV5’s upcoming anime series, Yatterman. Check out these backstage and onstage photos of the sisters in costume.

TV5 announced seven upcoming anime titles during the launch: D Gray-man, Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood, Golgo 13, Clannad, Inuyasha, Inuyasha: The Final Act, and of course Yatterman.

I didn’t know TV5 had acquired a license for Casshern Sins. Perhaps the cosplayers’ performance had an effect on those bankers after all. 🙂
