Nvidia Powers $99 HD Mobile Internet Device

Nvidia is best known for GeForce, a series of powerful 3D graphics chips beloved by hardcore gamers. That’s why they surprised everyone at the Mobile World Congress by announcing that their combined CPU/GPU chip will power a $99 HD mobile Internet device. The Nvidia Tegra processor will enable a gadget capable of 720p and 1080p playback and 3G/WiFi connectivity, in a package bigger than a smartphone but smaller than a netbook.

HD video and Internet access are among the two most popular consumer applications for computers today. By putting both in a portable form factor at a popular price, Nvidia could have a winner on their hands. I don’t know how much of a difference HD will make on such a small screen, but at $99 I’m not complaining.

So NVidia chose to go in between smartphones and laptops. A wise on their part and a “consumer satisfying” decision.

I’m just amazed they can offer a miniaturized 3G 3D-accelerated HD device for $99. Either they’re willing to lose money to enter the mobile space, or they’ve got some serious voodoo going on in their chip fabs.

I’ll surely check out this device. Mobile HD media viewing is awesome!
