Tracy Isabel Borres’ Statement on Facebook Scandal

Filipina college student Tracy Isabel Borres recently interacted with the indigenous Filipino Aeta tribe on an Ateneo de Manila University field trip. She posted nasty things about the tribe on her Facebook page, for only her friends to see. She thought the posts were funny. well, as expected of Ateneans, pretending to be nice and philantrophic but at the back of their minds their rich, never-done-a-single-household-chore selves are squirming and screaming ew ew.

If she can say those things in front of her friends, that just means that that is exactly what she really thinks. She can show her true colors in front of her friends. Oh, no, I discriminate her by her color!

You can say the same thing about the Vatican 🙂

    • bluemd says:

DO NOT GENERALIZE. Not all Ateneans are like her. Definitely there is a significant number of ditzy, ignorant, spoiled students and alumni who grew up in a bubble or are still living in a bubble. This girl needs to register with Dr. Manny Dy’s Philosophy of Ethics class to burst her bubble and move to a different country to live independently. Somewhere here in the US or Europe will be great so she will have to learn to clean, cook and wash her clothes by herself. And most probably also experience on how to be discriminated because she is from a minority group.

I am an Atenean and am proud to be one.

      • Emma says:

I agree, not all Ateneans are like her. There are just some people who are like that even if they are not in Ateneo. Hell, she’s just probably stressed ’cause she’s out of her comfort bubble. And over-reacted about it.
Really though, don’t judge the whole student population of the Ateneo just because one student from their just decided to express herself, even if it was totally inappropriate. But really, aren’t you also discriminating her like she’s a dirty aeta like she discriminated them?
I’m on the neutral side here people. I’m not dishing out judgments. Look at yourselves first and see the reality of things. We should really stop lying to ourselves about our reactions if we were faced with the same dilemma. Sure, it wouldn’t be as proclaimed as her statements were but deep inside, we know that the reactions are there but they’re just suppressed.

Discomfort is one thing. Racism is another. Anyone can be uncomfortable, but not everyone is a racist.

        • k says:

What? Are you saying her racism due to her “stress”? Stress doesn’t justify what she said, everyone experiences stress, some far more than what she endured and yet they don’t express that elitist-racist attitude she expressed in her blog. Sure, many of us will probably be shocked by the dirty living conditions of the aetas but, hello? Can you see how rock-bottom poor these people are? Being honest and being contemptuous are two very different things. Just because deep inside we’re honest enough to admit our discomfort due to the situation, doesn’t necessarily mean we all have the suppressed desire the mock other people due to their state. IDK about you though, since you seem to be hinting at the kind of reaction you would have with your last sentence. But as you said it’s “suppressed” anyway so congratulations! 🙂 Btw why are you even calling it a “dilemma”, immersions are optional…

She’s Illiterate that’s all :p many 4 million filipinos nowadays are illiterate XD

Ah, the famous generalization of Ateneans by society in general. Now, I beg to digress, for I am an Atenean myself. Sorry, Sir Mike. This time I’ll defend my school. I hope you understand.

Not everyone is like that. There are some people who really have a good heart. Surely, the majority of Ateneans are blinded by materialism, consumerism and capitalism that they refuse to acknowledge the existence of other less fortunate people.

But there are some who aren’t. There are people who are fully devoted to the good of society. There are still who care about our less-fortunate comrades in arms. There are still those who aren’t blinded by capitalism. In Ateneo terms, MERON PA.

So please, stop generalizing the entire Ateneo community. You never know, there might be some truly good-hearted people who might be offended by those statements.

And an increasing majority of the U.P. community, as well 🙂

kahit nun highschool ako (obviously hindi sa ateneo), my classmates would joke something like “yuck mukhang katulong” or “yuck squatter..”.. i’m sure in some way we all did (or still do) – PERO MALAMANG SINASARILI LANG NATIN

mali lang ni Tracy, akala nya sing-babaw nya lahat ng friends nya..
kahit anong sabihin nya na “private” yun post nya… bottom-line minaltrato nya ang mga Aetas online.. 🙂

  4. RAstaMONch says:

Also, I’d like to clarify some things.

    1. I am not defending Tracy Borres. I am angered at her statements about our less fortunate brothers, and at the same time the generalization of Ateneans as highly materialistic.

    2. For the “field trip”, it’s actually an exposure trip. Even Ate Edjie Gosiengfiao had it.

  5. CBFJ says:

I took up my MBA in Ateneo but as a fellow atenist at the same time as a la sallista well she must not do that at first.
