YouTube Rolls Out Related Videos in Embeds

YouTube has finally rolled out related videos and inline options in embeds. Just hover over a playing video to see related videos inline, or click on the menu button to get link and embed codes. To see how sweet this new feature really is, check out how many versions of the Caramel Dance you can watch just in the embed above.

If for any reason you don’t want these options in your embeds, just add the parameter rel=0 to the embed source. Look for a section of the embed code that looks like this:

embed src=”http://www.youtube.com/v/pgzRRP2c9zY”

and add &rel=0 like so:

embed src=”http://www.youtube.com/v/pgzRRP2c9zY&rel=0

to remove the options like this:

YouTube practically invented the embeddable video player, but competitors like Brightcove improved upon the concept by putting inline options into their players. Good to see YouTube is catching up and innovating again.

I smell GoogleTube going to copy cozmo.tv and splashcast

Good point, JC. It wouldn’t be too hard to extend inline functionality to playlists. In fact, I can imagine the inline video selection toggling between related, playlist, and user videos.

If YouTube starts doing that, people could spend hours in a single embed without even going to YouTube. In that case, they’d better roll out their embedded ads.

it might be a bit annoying for others who only want to see the particular video they’re looking at, specially when the mouse accidentally moves over the video window. This might take a bit of getting used to.

Looks like YouTube took your advice, Releena. Mouseovers no longer trigger related video selection. Now you need to play the video and click on the menu button to see related videos.
