Guild Wars 2 Announced
MSNBC’s Kristin Kalning calls it “an experiment that worked.” Guild Wars can run profitably without server fees because most of its game world is instantiated, cutting down data center costs. ArenaNet’s business model for the game consists of selling expansions of all sizes — from whole campaigns to PvP skill sets to character slots to soundtracks. While quite portable between multiple machines, all expansions are tied to user accounts, making piracy nearly impossible.
Looks like their episodic content business model worked even better than expected. Guild Wars 2 will host a persistent world on its servers — still without server fees. That will make Guild Wars 2 a true MMORPG, minus monthly subscription costs.
Having spent nearly two hundred hours in Guild Wars, I’m glad to hear the next Guild Wars expansion, Eye of the North, will include a Hall of Monuments allowing your Guild Wars 2 characters to inherit accomplishments from your Guild Wars characters. How’s that for a New Game Plus?

There it is, I’ve been wondering when you will post this, knowing you’re a GW fan (than WoW :p )
Now that GW2′s going MMO, I have even less reason to switch to WoW. Expect GW2′s virtual economy to become far more vibrant than GW’s.
Of course, I’m sure AMDG won’t have a problem with that, seeing as they’ll probably be selling both in the Philippines.
On a related note, wonder if Ragnarok 2 will sport a similar New Game Plus feature.
An MMORPG player with hot women. Cool! Just like Vin Diesel and Dungeons and Dragons. AMDG is still active? Nice! Last time I checked with them they won’t sell me Warcraft: RoC and WC: FT as they only sell wholesale; major bummer.
I made a post about Guild Wars 2 MMORPG: http://imbacore.blogspot.com/2009/08/guild-wars-2-mmorpg-first-look.html but I’ve a question to ask: if you’ve never played Guild Wars before, will it be necessary to play the first one? And if you’re a completist like me, does buying and playing the first one introduce you to a game world devoid of players (now that Guild Wars 2 is in the works)?
Playing the first Guild Wars probably won’t be necessary, but it will definitely help. Not only will experiencing story of the first game enhance your appreciation of the game world’s history, earning achievements in the first game will actually give you benefits in the second game.
ArenaNet will continue to support Guild Wars once Guild Wars 2 is out. I’ll probably continue to log into Guild Wars once in a while, if only to earn more achievements for benefits in Guild Wars 2. I expect many veteran players to do the same.
By the way, I didn’t know Vin Diesel played Dungeons and Dragons. That’s just so many levels of awesome. Thanks for the fun fact!
Im sick on all the MMORPGs here in Philippines. They say free to play but you cant compete if you will not pay. I want to try Guild Wars, they say that I can play it even my PC`s specs are not that good. If I will buy Guild Wars now it is still worthy because I think Guild Wars 2 will be release sooner. If I will buy Guild Wars game here in Philippines how much will it cost?
Achievements in Guild Wars confer benefits in Guild Wars 2 (through the Eye of the North expansion), so the first is worth playing if you intend to play the second.
I don’t know the price of Guild Wars in the Philippines, but the first campaign is available as a download for $19.99, with Eye of the North included for free if purchased before January 5, 2010.
