GMA Teenifies Lupin, Rips Off Sailormoon, Indiana Jones, Lara Croft

For years, ailing Philippine TV network GMA has gotten away with blatantly insulting the intelligence of the lower classes with their tasteless drama and fantasy offerings. This year, that strategy will backfire. First, they give the classic role of Lupin III to a kid far too young and inexperienced to play the globetrotting noble scoundrel. [...]

    you are hilariously ill-informed

“The very idea of Filipinos producing the very first live action series of a popular Japanese cartoon is already an achievement that we could be proud of”

blah! Sailormoon was already turned into a live action series back in ’04 by Japan. And don’t forget your beloved Meteor Garden was also an anime and manga before it was a live action soap opera.

@john – How can you not dis something that openly insult people who’ve followed, watched, and loved (and drooled) Sailor Moon for the past years? I’ve watched the anime when I was a kid and downloaded the entire fansub of its live action series 2 years ago. And believe me, when I saw the Super Twins trailer, WTF?!

True, we’re not their target audience and not everyone will recognize the costumes but, have you been to Divisoria and Wet Markets? Knock-off Sailor Moon merchandises are everywhere. So don’t expect the kids to even fall for GMA-7′s lack of originality.

If you’re really after the “substance”, they could have just made the costume a little pinoy or unique. The Sailor Fuku is not even within limits of our culture and is and has already been associated with the britons and japanese.

Sailor Moon is way different with Superman. Superman has what? A Cape? Wears his underwears over his pants? Weakness on certain elements? These are ideas that can be copied and twisted to re-create a new hero. But with the Sailor Moon costumes? Give me a break. I’ve said it already and I’ll say it again, whatever story they will place on Super Twins, it will and will always be remembered in history as a Sailor Moon knock-off.

It’s only a costume you say? That costume has already established a global image as the Sailor Moon costumes. C’mon, this is the internet age. Once a viewer posts a recorded copy of a single episode of Super Twins on YouTube, what reactions would you expect from Sailor Moon fans around the globe? Would you even dare to say, “hey that’s not sailormoon, we have a new story…”

    Duuuh?

And what would Sailor Moon cosplayers feel when little kids see them on shows and shout, “MOMMY!!! IT’S THE SUPER TWINS!!”

Anyway, showbiz is still business. Ala Paredes once said on my blog, “…Yes, they do want to entertain and help, but in the end showbusiness is still a business. TV stations want to make money and stay on top, most especially ABS and GMA. They wouldn’t entertain and help these poor people if the network and the hosts weren’t benefitting from it also. Ganon lang talaga, and that’s really how it works….” So stop hoping or giving them chances as they were all long overdue. It’s 2007 and we can’t even rival Bioman’s special effects.

PS. Mike quoted me as the source of this entry, so my comments are all based on his entry and mine. I cannot open your site as of the moment so I really don’t know what you’re discussing on the forums. Destiny’s IPL still sucks. And this reply should have been posted 2 days ago.

@yubnub – you might try to re-read my comments again as I was referring to Lupin and not Sailor Moon. And you may also try to click the link Mike has provided as his source to see that I HAVE the ENTIRE fansub of Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon (that’s the common term for the live action btw), including the special releases. And I was watching it only a week delayed per episode in 2003. Blah!

“The series is not a live action serialization of the Japanese anime Lupin III as earlier announced, but rather an attempt to introduce an entirely Filipino master thief character inspired by the original French thief character.

So if this is true then my preconceived notions about this upcoming show were pretty much shattered. And with this they can take the show in whichever direction they want. I think the show got a potential. It all boils down to execution and how well Richard can handle his role, and yeah of course the plot ( I hope they throw in some elaborate thieving sequence). SO yeah it’s too early to judge the
show, rumors it’s bound to air March 2007.

Tama ka. I’d like to elaborate it though.

Not a live action serialization but introduce a Filipino master thief character inspired by the original French thief character? Uhhmmmn…. let’s see… Filipino master thief? I imagine the character scaling the PBCom tower (Manila’s highest bldg?) to get some very precious object, uhmmm… I don’t know what a master thief would be going after that’s being stashed here in the Philippines. I imagine the character sneaking in at night to do that, uhm… trying to go through the manhole of the elevator to evade suspicion and eyewitness. uhmmnnn… what else? using sophisticated devices or probably explosives? Riding away with a very cool car? Anybody who’s in office knows or someone with money knows that they do not have to do it themselves, here in the Philippines, it’s so easy to pay someone else to do the job for you. Heck, we know a lot of names who just pays poor Filipinos to do the job for them. And on the sneaking in and scaling tall buildings? It’s not needed, it’s so easy to social engineer your way into any office or building.

    @john

Yeah, let’s go back to Super Twins, everyone will think about SailorMoon, well, not really everyone, only those who watched anime will be familiar with the Super Twins costumes. In other words, their market here is not us who are familiar with SailorMoon but those who don’t.

Their market is probably our less-informed or less-fortunate fellowmen? should we just allow them to continually insult a fellow Filipino? Rip-off or not, the point is the “creative” people behind the show are NOT CREATIVE!

And for the Indiana Jones and Lara Croft custome rip-off only goes to prove that the “creativity” has a new meaning. Filipina adventurer wearing a little more than a skimpy short and still have those smooth and well-shaped legs? I don’t think so…
