Rid the Philippines of N00bs!
Filipino tech blogger Jepoy Bengero posts his predictions for 2007. Number two is especially sigh-inducing.
More Filipino idiots will be online, and would be jumping into international message boards showing how stupid they are, dragging us with them.
With twenty million Filipinos going online in 2007, he’s probably right. This is why I’m brutal to n00bs, especially n00bs in Philippine business. The faster they can be educated or eradicated, the faster the Philippines can enter Web 2.0.
With Filipinos rapidly adopting social media, the Philippines’ smartest are only getting smarter. N00bs have only two choices: wise up or wipe out. To anyone who holds my country back by spreading ignorance, I will show no mercy.
Wired Cites WordPress as Acquisition Bait
WordPress, the insanely extensible and customizable open-source content management system that powers this blog, has been tagged by Wired magazine as acquisition bait in its January 2007 isssue.
The new de rigueur blog-management software, WordPress is favored by the majority of high-traffic posters. One caveat: It’s open source and unlikely to accept a corporate come-on.
Personally, I don’t think WordPress needs some big corporate owner to slow it down. It has long risen to the top of the blog software heap on its own, powered by its incredibly active developer community. With the rise of problogging, WordPress doesn’t need a centralized business model to drive its development — developers tweak it to make better blogs that can make more money, and those who package and release those tweaks gain fame and could make even more money. Mammals don’t need to be chained to dinosaurs.

PLDT Adding ISP Charges?
Philippine Internet connections are going down like broken carnival rides, so people here aren’t in a Holiday mood when it comes to their ISPs. That’s why I take serious notice when Abe Olandres points out a new extra charge PLDT will place on its already ridiculously expensive connectivity service.
The Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co. (PLDT) has said it will start charging fees for data transmission using its basic telephone landlines.
Through what it calls the alternate voice data line (AVD), subscribers who use the same basic telephone line for voice calls and data transmission will be required to connect a special data or voice access device to the basic telephone line.
PLDT said the service will provide a secure means to automatically process and authorize credit card transactions, real-time. One common use for AVD is credit card verification for business subscribers.
I don’t care if PLDT uses FUD to sell this useless security snake oil to gullible n00b retailers — but if this appears on my DSL bill just once, I will lose what little patience I have left for this telco giant. They will lose a long-time customer. I will be gone, sayonara-bye-bye. I will take my business elsewhere, and I will make sure all of you know it.
